Except For Fornication

The book of According to Matthew opens the eyes of people as to the causes of adultery and when it is permissible to divorce a defiled woman. “And it is said: A man who looses his wife from marriage, let him give her a bill of divorce. And I say unto you whosoever divorces his wife except for an account of fornication causes her to be a partner of the commission of adultery, and whosoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” (Matthew 5: 31, 32 [my paraphrase from a Greek text])

The Lord Jesus referred to the second law (Dt. 24:1-3) of Moses, which was known and practiced at that time. He revealed that women have natural tendencies to have sex and that a good man is responsible to fulfill his duty in keeping his wife moral and giving her sexual pleasure. Also, if a woman keeps herself clean from the time of giving her virginity to a man and marrying him unto the present, her husband has no right to divorce her ever.

After marriage and adultery: It is only when a wife becomes defiled that a man has the right to divorce her. Then he should give her a written contract or bill of divorce. Even in such a case of adultery and divorce, he could not marry again so as not to break the monogamy rule, and the defiled woman who became divorced could not offer another man chastity. Both would be in a position to live single lives.

Before marriage and sex: A righteous man (as Joseph, who was thinking about putting away Mary until he learned from the angel) would not want to live with an unclean woman. (Mt. 1:19) Contrarily, today, many illegitimate marriages begin by a man marrying a woman who did not marry her first man. Such a used or defiled (polluted by fondling or “known by a manespecially through penetration of the genitals, including incest) woman who marries another man commits fornication, not clean marriage. Such marriages should be annulled and divorce is permissible. Purity is a requirement. Men who live with unclean women as such have no biblical right to consider themselves in a good way with the Lord: See Galatians 5.19. Nevertheless, there are many such men teaching in the apostate churches of the era we live in.
