zahartee va'lailah sheemha yehovah, va'eshme'rah torateyha

Imperfect vav consecutive

The verb in the latter part of the sentence after the conversive vav changes to the same state of time as the first verb to compliment the beginning idea or add a relative event; in this particular case, they both are generally translated as if they were perfect tense.
