Sound (Psalm 119:79)

Transliteration:

yashoovo lee yer(d)ay'ey'ha, ve'yode'ay aydoteyha

Qere (pronounced keray) meaning “read”; and Ketib ( pronounced keteev) meaning “written”

Notes in the Hebrew text: Notice the scribal circle above dalet in the word that is written as “yodeayv”. See the apparatus at the bottom of your Hebrew text. Look for “79” which corresponds to the verse. Follow the line until you come to the “K”. Notice that the word beside it is different from the word in the text. Now go to the page in the “PROLEGOMENA” of your Hebrew text (page XLVI) that tells us what “K” means—“Ketib”. (Remember how we pronounced it above.) Then see Ges. § 17.

Also notice that there is an “a” at the end of the word “yode'ayv” in the verse. This refers to the first part of the note at the bottom of the page. Now, go back to the verse in your text and look in the margin, you will see it as “ ve'yode'ay, the way we will read it. According to Ges. § 17 a, the little circle always refers to the marginal reading.

However, not all translations are alike. Notice the keteev form and how the “American Standard Version. 1995” seems to translate the verse.
