Marijuana and Drug Abuse: War Against Pseudo-Philosophy

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Drug abuse is related to idolatry (serving other gods), witchcraft and drunkeness, acts biblically identified as works of the flesh. Drunkards don't walk in the Spirit; they serve their flesh. They can't walk or drive normally. Their speech becomes slurred and their physical actions deteriorate to awkwardness. They do things they wouldn't do sober and become less understandable. Their life is diminished from sobriety and the state of knowing what they are doing. They become a danger to themselves through their self-afflicted disability and to others also. Their false high is only temporary and does not glorify God.

Similarly, marijuana is misused as a false high and escape from dealing soberly with problems and hurts. It changes the mentality of a person also. Abuse of alcohol and drugs is contrary to the life that God wants people to live, having a natural high on life and obedience to their creator. God wants people to honor him through faith and sobriety. Contrarily, droping out on responsibility and life as some college educated heretics have professed while abusing psychedelic substances brings a curse. Living in love, longsuffering, peace and the fruit of the Spirit of God has no need for the works of the flesh, life is very good and happy naturally.

Drugs and substances that distort the mind have been known to be extended and misused as a form of witchcraft or sorcery. In 2 Kings 9:22, Jezebel is noted as a woman of fornication and sorceries. Disobedient people and things like this bring great judgment from God. Such people walk contrary to faith in God and the direction of his people, and generally good life in all aspects. Subcultures as such damage and even bring down nations. Nevertheless, God repays sin with punishment, and Jezebel's example is proof of it. This is just another reason why people should not become involved in sexual, national or religious deviations and never extend their liberty unto substance abuse.

I would like to share some thoughts because there are a lot of pseudo-philosophical influences out there in this dark world we live in. It is abuse, not use of a substance, that determines that it is a sin. However, marijuana has never been specifically referenced as a biblical, social or medical use. Misuse of drugs related with sorcery (witchcraft--KJV) and idolatry--pharmakeia--has been mentioned as a work of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21), a sin.

Christians must avoid such sins. When people eat food and give glory to God they give thanks unto God. As such, they have minds that are not blurred with drugs; they have minds that put God first, not second or down the list after abuse of a fleshly drug. Our purpose as Christians on earth is to glorify the Lord, and to do that a person cannot be drunken in excess or distorted on a drug. In Old Testament times, people who over-indulged time and again were taken out of society (killed by the people for the good of society so God's wrath would not consume them all (https://www.hesedken.com/clubsite/scrpdt21.html).

Today, the Jewish falsely teach and encourage similar substance abuse using alcohol during their Purim celebration (https://www.hesedken.com/holiday/purim.html). The Jewish have a Talmud religion, not a Moses-type religion. Many people have been deceived by those claiming to be religious and contradicting principles of the written Torah (https://www.hesedken.com/dating_and_marriage/first_law.html).

There is no glory to God in marijuana abuse or substituting for a natural high on life. Biblical medical references relate to prayer, anointing of oil, laying on of hands and methods of faith (https://www.hesedken.com/clubsite/touch.html), and even using a proper amount (perhaps zero for addicts and ex-addicts) of wine (1 Ti. 5:23, https://www.hesedken.com/addiction_positive/substance_abstinence.html) but never resorting to marijuana or fleshly abuse (Galatians 5.19-21).

Word Studies

The Greek word pharmakeia (see Galatians 5:20 KJV for witchcraft) is very interesting in the Bible. A person who practices this black art is called a

pharmakos:

The Greek word pharmakon is used in a plural form in 2 Kings 9:22:

The Hebrew word for sorcery is kayshayf, which the Greek text translated it in its plural form of the word above (pharmakon) in this particular verse (2 Kings 9.22).

Notice in Micah 5: 2 (KJV) it talks about the coming redeemer (Jesus the Christ) and in 5:12 (KJV) that sorcerers and soothsayers will be cut off. Christians have overcome such sins through the work of the Lord.
