The Legalization Of Marijuana Distribution And Hedonism Problem The distribution of drugs through pharmacies and legalized outlets may alleviate the bootleg problem to some degree, and so may bars and stores serving alcohol, but it does not adequately prevent hedonistic or substance abuse situations. It is a moral responsibility of a self-governing society not to allow itself to become legally tolerant to any forms of idolatry, or its members to serve things other than God. People must not be encouraged by any form of leadership to serve their flesh and ignore Biblical guidance. Drug abuse is a sin of the flesh and theologically condemned. (Gal. 5:19-21) I believe government laws are necessary to protect a community not only from a substance problem or its distribution, but from the community and individual spoil of serving the flesh. Even if all substances were legalized at a competitive price, there would be no need for bootleg sales. That may solve the illegal sales problem. However, as a government control mechanism, to disallow the legalized outlets from making a profit upon the spoiling of the community through drug or alcohol sales would turn the substance abuser back to the bootleg sale because of ease and lack of discrimination. So then, hypothetically, to prevent the illegal sales, licensed sales would have to be without discrimination. Then, that would leave only one party with responsibility to prevent abuse—the buyer (who could possibly be an abuser, or naively become one--selling pharmaceutical narcotics to an unlearned person is like selling a loaded pistol to a five-year old). So then, laws would have to make the buyer alone responsible for his actions. If he were caught in an act of abuse, which all drugs addicts would be susceptible to, then to free society from the abuser, the laws would have to be made to take the abuser out of society (Dt. 21:18-21) through jail or a drug rehabilitation program. There is not an easy big-government solution to preventing and responding to substance abuse, or as far as that goes, any matter of serving the flesh. However, there is one successful society—the Christian community. Christians have a desire not to abuse nor put anything between themselves and God. They should gather among themselves to keep themselves pure and undefiled, and have no association with the works of darkness. As difficult as it may seem, especially since we have lost to a substantial degree the legal right to make our own homogeneous, real estate laws, we must still do whatever we are able to not be deceived and soiled by a hedonistic world.
