Deuteronomy 22:21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. A woman who has not had sex with a man is considered a virgin. A virgin that has sex with a man or has been defiled is not a virgin and not allowed to offer herself as a potential mate to another man. That would be an act against the institution of marriage and chastity--folly! Folly means a disgraceful, senseless act, committing a sin against chastity and acting like a whore in this text. We see the penalty for folly of this sort was death. It was a community responsibility to avenge unrighteousness in this way in Israel. This punishment was to be implemented for the sake of cleanliness of the land and community: so the crime or folly would be deterred for fear of not being tolerated. However, in America today, young girls are not taught to fear losing their virginity. They are not taught to keep themselves undefiled so that they can give their purity to a life time partner. Hollywood entices youth and condemned acts rather than warning its hegemony-plagued audience and exhorting them. Our media is corrupt and does not edify. May God raise up men, women and communities that will honor His righteousness and purity, amen.
Explanations, paraphrases and comments: This is an account of the court proceeding concerning a virgin: Deuteronomy 22:13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, In this verse is depicted a man who is not satisfied with his wife and hates her. People may have antagonistic emotions after having married. 14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: The man complains and notifies members of the community that he did not find his wife a virgin, a woman he was expecting to be undefiled and chaste. This gives her a bad name and puts her life in a bad position with the neighbors. We should have communities and neighborhoods today that protect our women. 15 Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: The parents of the woman evidently were expected to keep a cloth (see v.17) in case they needed it for proof of virginity and take it to the leaders of the community (in the gate). Do you understand what is required for proof? 16 And the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; The father of the girl must explain the situation to the community religious and social court, so to speak. 17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. The parents of the daughter are like her lawyer, defending her and giving the evidence of her innocence before the elders of the community. They prove she was a virgin by demonstrating with a cloth giving proof of her virginity. They spread it before the religious leaders. 18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; The elders of the community (city) take the man that hated his wife (v. 13) and punish him to an extent because his accusation was proven false. 19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. The elders shall impose a fine (twice the amount of a taken virgin in v. 29) on the guilty man and give it to the father of the married woman because the man slandered her name even though she was an innocent virgin and chaste at the time of their union. She is judged to be his legitimate wife; and he must never divorce her.
This is an account of the court proceeding concerning a non-virgin: 20 But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: In the case the man told the truth concerning the whore-likeness manifestation of the woman (she didn't have a physical manifestation of virginity) and the parents did not present a virginity-proof cloth to prove the woman's innocence: 21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. The judgment is for the men of the community (city) to take the woman who committed the sin of pretending or posing herself as chaste and eligible for marriage and execute her with capital punishment by stoning her unto death; for the reason she committed folly in Israel, to play the whore under her father's care. This type of judgment is the way to keep this type of evil from occurring among the communities. Of course, capital punishment should be alleviated in our day but not to the extent judgment should be evaded. Sadly in the USA today women are living under unchaste circumstances while living with a man. They don't like to be called whores seemingly because they have made up their minds to not have sex with other men than their present one, but that in itself is not enough to eliminate their unchastity. Such illegitimate relationships should be annulled. Many erring ministers condone fornication and adultery.
This is an account concerning an act of illegitimate sex with a wife: 22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. If a man (the text doesn't specifically mention whether married or not) is having sex with a married woman, then the penalty is death for both who participate. This is the judgment and way to deal with sexual abuse cases of this type so they won't continue in Israel. Our wicked society today hardly does anything for acts of fornication with a married woman. However, once a woman becomes unchaste, her marriage is irreparable! Many people may suffer, especially the children.
This is an account concerning an act of illegitimate sex with a betrothed woman (considered a wife even though still a virgin): 23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; If in the city or community a man finds and has sex with a virgin whom her father made an agreement with another man to be her future husband 24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. The judgment is to bring both participants unto the gate of the city, and the men of the city are to stone them until they die (capital punishment). The reason for the woman's guilt is because she did not scream (ask for help) while around other people in the city. Hence, community involvement was expected in the protection of the chastity of the community women. The reason the man is guilty is because he humbled his neighbor's wife (betrothal is equivalent to marriage even though the sexual consummation is for a future date). This is the way to put away evil from among you: capital punishment. Note that women must not be silent and compromising when being attacked or enticed. I should think some women would prefer to die with dignity if necessary to prove innocence by screaming. Sadly in America, women do not have community protection as they did in Israel (even though we should!). Neither do our laws prescribe capital punishment or even financial and prison liability in many cases. Multiculturalism is a violation of community protection in itself. We must at least strive to provide our own communities wherein we can give our loved ones a better environment to grow up in.
This is an account concerning an act of rape with a betrothed woman when she screams and complains but there is no one to come to her aid: note that she actively refuses—no immoral compromise (such as even being silent could be construed) 25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die: The rapist shall be given the death penalty. The crime of rape still carries a penalty and is executed in America although it may be difficult to prove sometimes. 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: In this case the woman is not guilty and no punishment should be given to her. She is acquitted of guilt because it is like a matter of manslaughter or murder, the criminal is guilty, not the victim. [Nevertheless, it does destroy her virginity, and it would destroy her future and opportunity as a wife if the rapist merely received a life sentence instead of the death penalty as many do today because she would have a male cognizance factor still pending. Hence, rape deserves the harshest penalty to provide opportunity for the once virgin. Those who choose to forbear capital punishment would also forbear the rape victim of clean and legitimate marriage as long as the rapist lives.] 27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. For he found her in a vulnerable place with no personal security, and the woman refused his advancement by crying, and no one was around to help her keep the man from violating her.
This is an account concerning an act of sex with a woman that is a virgin and not betrothed (no marriage agreement having been made) 28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; If a man that takes hold of a woman (a virgin not obligated to any future husband) and has sex with her, and they are found: 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. Then the man that had sex with the virgin is responsible to pay her father fifty shekels, and she becomes his wife because he took her virginity. He is obligated to remain married to her for ever. (This did not leave the woman desolate. The father was given an amount of money, perhaps as a monetary consideration. Note it was only half the amount of the fine for slander in v. 19. The marriage of virgins taken by men does not leave the communities of Israel with unchaste women. The community prospers in morality because of this.) More details...
