If a Christian makes a bad decision, he must repent of it even as King David did. He must not let it continue.

James Dean: Victim Of Circumstances
James Dean seemed like a very nice, handsome, young man during his youth from what I've studied about him. He looked so innocent and precious in a school basketball photo. He moved from a farm town, racially homogeneous atmosphere to a far more diverse, multicultural, less morally restrained area, New York City. Rather than expressing high school dramatics that has some moral guidelines, he left for a lifestyle in a place with much more subtle, social adversaries. It seems he may have experienced a moral, gradual degradation as many young people without group, moral support (such as a Christian fellowship and Bible study) realize incrementally. A good time to turn back from Disaster Road to God's direction is at first notice. If a person continues to live without spiritual edification, deep tragedy sets in. He worked hard at dramatic arts there in the big city among acquaintances that may not have been very helpful spiritually, if not harmful. Maybe he did not check his life from a retrospective view. Perhaps his first wreck was so subtle it went unnoticed.
Realizing his work and professional talent was noticed he eventually went to California to further develop his acting career in movies. His style of speech and movement of his hands may not have been from training from his youth. The smoking-a-cigarette posture and foul language seemed to be a subversion and deterioration (fallen id and ego) from his surrounding associates and the field of entertainment (demonic super ego). “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” (I Cor. 15:33 KJV) Associate with people who have reverence for God and obey his commandments, not those who indulge in self-gratification or other sins and influences. “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.” (Psalm 138:7 KJV)
Hollywood has always had a negative effect on people because the industry is not designed to develop Christian acting, obeying God. It is generally a negative art of mimicking or demonstrating worldly people which has to do with emotions and actions that are not pleasing to God whereas in contrast a Christian response is guileless, positive, direct, forward and pleasing to him: study the the book of Acts. Hollywood even tries to mimic Christians.
I have heard of other bad choices and decisions concerning Dean but I do not really know what his real life was like. However, I'm sure he would have been much better off to have been directed toward a Christian type of work and not aim for vainglorious fame and wealth. Young people don't always get the true perception of things through the media; they get an idea of what the media leads them to think. This is dangerous.
Our youth need theological challenge, especially during their middle and high school years so they can have the ability to not be easily deceived or deterred from righteousness by the world (or even their public schools and erring churches). Youth need to seek God for spiritual development continually; God will make provision for them for other things.
James Dean Advertizement
There is a “gap” between parents and children today, as Jimmy's cousin mentions below. However, families that serve Christ together are blessed, and they have good relationships that overcome their gaps. Sadly and unfortunately for the public, Hollywood has by trend emphasized imaginatively and detrimentally the negative side of personal, family and community problems instead of the healthy way of Christian moral, ethics and resolve.
