WHY AA IS NOT FOR A CHRISTIAN

I have not been to an AA meeting in well over thirty years. I do remember it as a place to meet for people who have lacked self-control and are known as drunks or “alcoholics”.

People suffering from addiction may feel as though they are the only ones suffering from their particular problem. However, when they come to a group, even if they don't feel liked or welcome, they realize there are others there that have at least a similar problem, alcohol. That less selfish realization in itself is progress. The idea of the lone struggle does not stand any longer.

On the other hand, I don't believe AA is a good place for a Christian who has deteriorated through addiction. Many people in AA would become offended with Christian morals and beliefs, and would not enjoy participating with someone who upholds such beautiful things, let alone encourage the suffering Christian to progress.

So it would be better if AA meetings would separate all those that consider themselves Christians and let the others remain. Two meetings without division would be better than one with discomfort or animosity among the people. Of course, AA has never protected and promoted Christians in such a way.

If necessary, give yourself at least a couple of years to recover at a Christian community from your last relapse. A Christian's purpose is to be well, and make a goal to go on to perfection (Hebrews 6:1-3). This takes the judgment and will to separate from the antagonistic. Those that followed Jesus did so willfully; the crowds that turned away did not have a lasting influence on the disciples. A Christian with a substance abuse problem is not a powerless person in need of a higher power; Christians that want to correct their life already have the Lord most high as their supporter.
