AVOIDING THE
SELF-AFFLICTION DEATH OF WINE AND DRUGS People suffer psychological pain. They are offended and harmed by society, maybe a relative or the erring, complacency of biblical ignorance of several members of a family. It is depressing. Offenses and depression is pain, mental pain. People turn to something to take the space of that pain in order to find some relief. The more fortunate endure and access superior leadership, and encouragement to bypass the misery without hurting themselves through self-affliction. Others may stumble and turn to the anti-Christian media's cure-all... drugs. Perhaps they see an older relative fall into the medical profession's error of pharmaceutical substitute, and follow the same mistake through other forms such as alcohol or anti-depressants. Then they find themselves days or years later tied up in an addiction cycle. They still deal with the psychological pain but add on other self-destructive pains. Drugs or alcohol is not the way for young men or women who want to live lives of leadership and blessing. Drugs can't replace the direction and peace of depending on God through endurance of psychological pain, endurance of social injustice, and endurance of surrounding negligence and failure of brotherly love. 1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. 2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows? 3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. 8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31 KJV) Listen to someone who cares about your future, the words of a caring mother in the proverb. She reminds her son of their genetic closeness and identity, “son of my womb”. Relatives have a natural desire to care for one another. A son under such breeding would normally respect her advice. She was a devout woman of prayer and vows, relating and communicating to God in concern for her son and his future. She relates to her son that good life is nothing like that of those ready to perish, discouraged, suffering poverty and miserable. There is no need to misuse their alcoholic remedies. She exhorts him be a speaker so as to keep people from destruction, to judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy. We live in an hedonistic society, don't let lewd men and women entice you so as to take away your sexual purity. Stay away from substance abuse and addiction. It causes people to forget what God wants them to do, and such who are deceived pervert the judgment of others also. If your heart is heavy, if you are suffering psychological pain, endure it, let God's word lift you up, study the Scriptures. However, drug abuse will only destroy and give temporary relief to those avoiding God's method. Escape such indulgence and destruction. God offers relief and deliverance from depression, anxiety and psychological pain to everyone, but the individual must seek Him, and allow his or her heart to be lifted up through divine inspiration. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) Christians must be directed to endure psychological pain and deal with it soberly through God's wisdom and the Scriptures. For an example, you have brothers and sisters in Christ enduring and overcoming the same things you go through. Find good and helpful fellowship.
