Blessing Of Homogeneous Social Conditions

In Old Testament times God's people were under racial and cultural laws. Their society was informed by its leaders how to live and do righteously (when the ministers obeyed God). Under righteous rule, a person that committed a sin knew that he would not get away with it without a sacrifice and that the people he lived around were under the same standards. The people of God were instructed with the highest form of “tough love” to keep the community from a negative influence.

Habitual Drunkenness was not tolerated. It was a death penalty sin in Israel.

Dt.21:18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: 19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; 20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. 21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

In America and many other countries, laws against drunkenness are not so strict and the people are far less restrained from individual and community-polluting, self-indulgence.


The Great Sin Of Gambling And Covetousness

How many times do you hear the word "Bingo" today?


To the contrary, people in America are not under Theodemocratic laws. We are more like a diverse, apostate, new Babylon in many ways. Therefore, drinking alcohol in the USA is generally in a far less theologically educated and restrained social environment, a social atmosphere wherein many continuously mock or do not regard God's standards. This type of chaotic, social ignorance and lack of God's direction causes an adverse effect on the innocent and untaught.



Learn more especially about Christian and homogeneous community support. Generally, two big things to look out for are: Secular rehabs do not lead their clients into a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and the erring, so-called "Christian" programs may lead a victim into an illegitimate marriage. God wants better for everyone, so you must deny yourself and let the Scriptures lead you into God's righteousness, not off-track leaders.


Abstinence: Honor Of Staying Away Completely From Alcohol Consumption

Considering the great social differences, I personally think it is advisable for those that have never studied and learned the Bible well not to drink alcohol at all. You can't get drunk or addicted if you don't drink any! God will honor believers who do things of selflessness or self denial in order not to sin against him.


Strict Intolerance Of Alcohol Consumption

Drinking alcohol in a proper manner is not a sin. However, many times drinking alcohol is not necessarily recommended. As a matter in fact, there are times when it was specifically not allowed:

Vow And Separation Unto The Lord

Let me explain further by another example of holiness. There were times when God's people (Israel) could drink wine, and also times when they could not such as making a vow and separation unto the Lord:

Nu 6:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: 3 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried. 4 All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. (KJV)

Alex Jones has his problems, but Big Pharma and anti-Christian doctors that prescribe drugs instead of Jesus for peace of mind are horrible monsters.

The Wicked Pervert The Righteous: Tempting And Oppressing (Nazarites were not supposed to drink wine)

Amos 2:10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. 11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD. 12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. (KJV)


Piper, although not a good marriage counselor in some aspects, has some good advice on substance abstinence without being legalistic and denying the blessings that God has given to mankind. “For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.” (I Cor. 10:26)

I think the problem in the USA is that most homes do not promote Christian love. The young look unto other things and become enticed easily into things that can destroy them.

It is the abuse of substance that causes harm, and that abuse comes from unlearned or unguarded attempts of experimentation with alcohol or other substances.

Men of God Are Expected To Be Examples Of Officers Of Good Decisions, Sobriety, And Righteousness Unto The Weak

Proverbs 31:1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. 2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows? 3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. (KJV)

Contrast the difference between the goodness of “self-control” or “temperance”, which is of the fruit of the Spirit, with “drunkenness”, a work of the flesh. (Galatians 5:18:25). A person with self-control masters his sensual appetites and is not as a person that has become controlled by a substance (alcohol) as the word “dedoulomenas” in Titus 2:3 indicates.

I Timothy 3.3: The Greek word “paroinon” means “a person who habitually drinks too much and thus becomes a drunkard--'drunkard, heavy drinker.'”1

I Timothy 3.8: The deacon should not “have an inclination toward” much wine would be an alternative Greek translation instead of not “given to” much wine as presented by the KJV.

The context seems to emphasize that amount is of importance; it says not too “much” wine. A moderate drinker that drinks only a little is not considered a drunkard or an addicted person..

Dispensation Fulfillment

The New Covenant came into effect and the ministers of the church were given guidelines as to staying sober and being a proper example to society:


Church Ministers: Bishop, Deacons

I Ti 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (KJV)

Notice in Titus 2:3 that the KJV states, “not given to much wine”. The word “given” can be traced to the Greek word “dedoulomenas” meaning "having been enslaved" in the Greek text. The word in the context expresses clearly becoming “addicted” to alcohol or under its control similarly as a slave (doulos) would be a servant of his master. Alcohol-addicted people give their will over to not another person but to a substance.

Difference Between Enslaved To “Much” And Drinking Only A “Little” Wine

Titus 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. 6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. 7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. (KJV)

The bishop is not supposed to act like someone who has been negatively influenced by alcohol or a drunkard. (See I Ti 3.3.)

Titus 1:7

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;



Health And Ceremony (However, if you have had a former addiction problem or would like to avoid the possibility of drinking too much, remember the abstinence example)

There is nothing wrong with grape juice as a substitute for fermented wine in fellowship ceremonies or as a health substance. It is so much better for a person to go without alcohol and be sober than taking a chance by drinking it and committing the sin of drunkenness. Those that do not have proven records of drinking only a little may avoid the risk of further addiction.

I Ti 5:21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. 23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. 24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid. (KJV)



Acts: 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.


Avoid Over-Indulging

Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (KJV)






Alcohol And Substance Abuse Causes Other Problems

Gn 19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. (KJV)

To the contrary, some men and women may have sexual problems without alcohol abuse. For instance, it may be ideological or actual. But the point I want to get to is that there are so many Scripturally unlearned men teaching about the Bible these days. Jimmy Swaggart was a man who got caught making an immorality and big-audience mistake at the same time. I can understand a man's nature to fall into a sin, so I really never felt bad toward Jimmy for his desire to look upon another woman. Humans have temptations. What did bother me was so many people listened to such a man that needs theological and linguistic skills, not to be teaching what he doesn't understand well. I really believe he gives a very poor explanation on his alcohol presentation also. (His site seems to have removed the video below. Maybe he saw my reproof!)

He seems to legalistically confuse drinking only a very little with intemperance. There are many other agenda-bent type preachers as Swaggart who may have some good intentions but fail to bring the people up to a more gracious level of understanding. People must develop their own methods of learning and not depend on such teachers. For such, I recommend self-study at least with a Bible and concordance.

One good thing I can have praise about him, if he told the truth, and I don't see why he wouldn't--there is no objective research required for that, is that he never drank alcohol. I admire people who have been so determined not to (even perhaps if it were for reasons not through perfect, biblical understanding)!
